The cassette tape player

You would think I would be used to it by now. Maybe I am.

This coming week we are moving house. It used to be said that moving was one of the three most stressful events in your life, the other two being changing job and divorce. It strikes me that this statistic is probably from another time. A time when people believed houses were for living in and jobs were for life.

As I write this morning, moving house reminds of an old mono cassette tape player, circa 1967, where the pause button has been depressed. Once the pause button is released the message on the tape will say “isn’t it about time you upgraded this machine?” – whether it’s this player or a new ipod, ipad or whatever, there’s always a pause button.

Interestingly, there is also a play and a fast-forward button. Surrounded by boxes days before we move I’m looking forward to pressing both!
