Community Spirit

by rightantler on January 1, 2009

It's funny. I use the internet all the time. Through various online tools I am 'connected' to many, many people. Most of these people I don't know awfully well truth be told. However, the quick instant message conversation or a quick tweet here and there gives me a feeling of community. I'm not talking about a particular group on Facebook or social networking site, it's less defined than that.

On this eve of 2009 it reminds me that there are a lot of good, indeed great people in the world. A few of these are my friends, many are merely acquaintances. Many I've barely spoken to for more than 10 minutes at a time, let alone got drunk with! Yet, the wonders of technology enable me to touch on these people's lives. To 'connect' briefly and be a part of something bigger: my community.

So to my friends and family reading, thank you for your company and friendship. But to everyone else who allows me to be a part of their extended community,  THANK YOU as well. Be it Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter or anything else, our interactions may be brief but they are important. They remind us we are part of a wider world, an exciting world, which is not about iPhones, computers, televisions and motor cars. A world that's about people and human interaction. I for one, appreciate the reminder.

Here's to 2009!
